A Responsible Discussion About the Budget

Neither the representatives of a nation, nor the whole nation itself assembled, can validly engage debts beyond what they may pay in their own time.                                                        – Thomas Jefferson

President Obama has released his budget for 2011.  It calls for a spending freeze on certain pieces of the budget, but these “savings” are insignificant when compared to the increases in spending elsewhere in the budget. Frank Wolf has proposed a SAFE commission to propose how we might solve our budget woes, but then rejected the President’s offer to make this a reality. In short, there has been a lot of talk about fixing the nation’s budget problems for more than 30 years, but virtually all of this talk is designed to convince the voters that the other party is the problem while in fact both parties have jointly created the problem in order to retain power for the incumbents.

It is telling that the only time the budget was balanced in recent memory was when we had a President of one party and a Congress of another party and they were each competing to be perceived as fiscally responsible to attract voters that had demonstrated their independence by voting for Perot in 1992 and then voting in a Republican Congress in 1994. As soon as one party (the Republicans) got full control of the government, fiscal responsibility vanished. And when the other party got control, things only got worse.

The time has come to correct this problem and to have a serious discussion about our deficit spending habit and the impacts of the national debt as a whole. Our campaign has prepared this portion of the website to do exactly that.

This is not an easy discussion. Our country is addicted to deficit spending just as much as a drug addict is addicted to drugs and getting off of this addiction will be challenging. But just as in any addiction, we must first fully admit that we have a problem. While some people recognize the problem, too many in our society believe that it is only a minor problem that is under control. We will present the plain facts that demonstrate that this problem is severe and that if we do not change our ways quickly, devastating effects will occur.

Over the coming weeks we will expand to this section and conclude with a responsible counter-proposal to Obama's budget. While our budget will not be as detailed as the President's due to the fact that we do not have an extensive staff at our disposal, it will be sufficient to lay out our vision of where our country needs to head.

Finally, we encourage you to post your comments to our articles so that we can move this discussion forward in a productive manner.
